Assessing Your Laser Practice for Safe Use

The use of lasers has gone from science fiction to science fact. They are commonplace in a variety of healthcare settings. Unfortunately, this commonality can predispose organizations to become complacent and forget that lasers can pose significant health risks to patients and staff alike, including corneal damage, skin burns, and fires.  Ensure your team partners with your Laser Safety Officer to assess your laser practice for safe use.

This would include:

  • Assessing your laser equipment for damage and proper functioning.
  • Comparing PPE in use for the specific laser equipment (especially eye wear).
  • Assessing the hazard zones for the beam paths for any safety hazards.
  • Posting of appropriate laser warning signs.
  • Determining safe use of barriers and curtains.
  • Assessing for reflective surfaces and how these are mitigated.
  • Ensuring access control to the procedure room.
  • Review of fire prevention safety actions.
  • Confirming that staff are receiving the proper education and training.

As lasers have become more portable, organizations sometimes move these items to new locations to support better patient flow with the same ease as switching out office chairs.  Any decision to relocate laser equipment should prompt an update to the laser safety assessment by the Laser Safety Officer to ensure that any new vulnerabilities with the new location are addressed.  This includes any new treatments associated with the laser equipment.  We noticed a client had relocated their laser to a new treatment room without consulting with the Laser Safety Officer, who was quite surprised when we told them of the 3x5 foot uncovered wall mirror in the corner we found.

Organizations must address the hazards of laser use and understand that a re-evaluation should occur as location or practice changes are made.
